If you have a serial number you'll need to first, make sure you're logged on to the internet and then open the PeoplePutty program, go to Options and input the serial number into the appropriate box, once this is done click 'get code' and you'll see the 'unlock code' box automatically populate. When you see the 'unlock code' box populate, you're done and ready to work with PeoplePutty. You do not need to stay online while working with PeoplePutty... you need only be online
during registration.

2 I want to use PeoplePutty on a machine that doesn't have an internet connection, but I can't get an unlock code. How do I get one?

you can do it yourself from a machine that has an internet connection! take a look at this page. Send your serial number and system id to support@haptek.com and we can send you your unlock code. Normally you can do this by clicking the button to "Get Code" in the PeoplePutty Options menu.

3 I just tried to reinstall PeoplePutty on a new machine and it told me that my license had expired, but I purchased the program from you! What should I do?

PeoplePutty tracks the number of times a copy of people putty is unlocked and only allows a limited number of unlocks. Send your original purchase info along with your system id for the new machine and your serial number to support@haptek.com and we can get you a new unlock code.

4 Can PeoplePutty save out an AVI file, or MPEG?

No, PeoplePutty is mainly for making characters to play in the Haptek engine. We have had limited success using other screen capture tools like camtasia with PeoplePutty to make AVIs of our characters.

5 Can PeoplePutty export a VRML, OBJ, 3DS, or Poser 3D model?

No, PeoplePutty only exports models ready to be used in the Haptek engine.

6 Can I use my PeoplePutty character in Poser or Bryce?

No, your PeoplePutty character can only be used in the Haptek Plugin on your webpage, or another program written to handle Haptek characters, such as KATE.

7 What Text To Speech(TTS) voices does the Haptek Player or PeoplePutty install?

We do not install any TTS voices. We do use any of the SAPI4 or SAPI5 voices that are installed on the users machine.

8 Can I change the TTS voice that my character speaks with in a webpage?

Yes you can, but there are some catches. The Haptek Player lets the user decide which TTS voice they want to use by default. You can change your own by using the "Haptek SAPI Config" program installed with the Haptek Player to choose the voice for your machine. However if you want everyone who comes to your page to use the same voice, then you will have to check to see if they have the voice installed, if they do then you will have to activate that voice in the webpage. 9 Can I use PeoplePutty to make textures that wrap arround the side of my characters head?

Yes and No. You can use the hoods in PeoplePutty to texture the sides of a characters head, then adjust the hood's color to match your face as closely as you can. However if you want to make a high quality texture completely using your own pictures, then that will still take some work in an image painting tool like Photoshop. Take a look at the Haptek Guide and in the section for making content and "Importing Texture" for information on how Haptek does this.

10 Do you support Macintosh, Mac OS X, Linux, Unix, or Be operating systems?

At this time we do not support any of those platforms with the Haptek Plugin or PeoplePutty. The Haptek engine has been used on Macs and Unix in the past so if you are interested in writing your own program that uses the Haptek engine to work on those platforms contact haptek@haptek.com.

If you have a newer version of PeoplePutty, then the gears have been replaced with the word "Options". Click on that instead.

KATE only uses the shape and the texture map for a character, it does not use any accessories attached to your character

15 I made a texture map in PeoplePutty but KATE will not let me load it! What do I do?

Because KATE trades your texture map automatically with other people using KATE on your contact list, the size of the texture map is limited to less than 69KB. You can try to make a smaller texture map in PeoplePutty, by changing the resolution from the default of 512 to 256 or 128 using the slider in the Texture section of PeoplePutty.

17 I just bought PeoplePutty. On the Faces, I only have the first screen of Girl's faces. There are no visible scroll arrows (< >) like the ones that exist in other sections (hair, eyes, etc). Where are they?

There are NO scroll arrows there, you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to maneuver there, or click and drag with your mouse to scroll.

19 I'm trying to use the Haptek Player on my Microsoft IIS Server; why won't my page load?

This has been fixed with newer versions of PeoplePutty. The problem was that we used the .htr extension for our Haptek archive files, and this extension is understood by IIS as being some sort of administrative tool. We have changed over to use the extension .haptar instead. To get your page to work, you can change your extension to be .haptar and change the references to the .htr in your html to use .haptar.

20 I have PeoplePutty... Is there a way to make up a character, and then send it by email so others can view and hear the character?

First, you must own a full version of PeoplePutty in order to save, this option is not available on the Demo product. If you don't own the full version and would like to, you can purchase it from Haptek.com. If you own the full version, click on file, save, then choose flat and save your file as an .htr file. Once saved you should be able to forward as an attachment and anyone should be able to open the htr file provided they have downloaded the Haptek Player, which is necessary in order for them to view the product.

21 I've tried your suggestions about changing display settings, but nothing is working. What's the story with Error 28 ?

The Haptek Player only support a limited set of texture formats for DirectX. Many Graphics cards only support formats in a specific setting. For instance most NVidia cards support the formats we need in 16 and 32 bit color settings. However many Matrox cards only support the formats we need in 24 bit color settings! Unfortunately depending on what card you have it is also possible that none of the formats we need are supported! But before deciding that that's the problem make sure to try every setting your card can use. Other things you can try that will possibly help are: Make sure you have the very latest drivers from your graphics card maker, Try installing a newer version of DirectX, even though it isn't required, sometimes bugs are fixed that make things work for older versions too.

If you can figure out how to you are welcome to! But the official answer would be, no. However, you should be able to have your Java Applet and the Haptek Player on the same page and then use Javascript to communicate between them.

We depend on DirectX 6 and above being installed, and that is not available for WinNT.

PeoplePutty does not allow you to change the color of the hair. If you really must do this, it is possible but you will need access to other tools from Haptek so that you can change the texture map used by the accessory. Contact haptek@haptek.com for more information.
