VirtualFriend 2 and VirtualFriend 3

What's the deal with VirtualFriend 2 and VirtualFriend 3 ?
More to the point, how do I play my VirtualFriend 2 scripts and animations in the VirtualFriend 3 browser plugin ?

  • A little History

  • When we wrote VirtualFriend 3, we started completely from scratch, since we wanted to make a product which was more feature rich and 'higher class' than VirtualFriend 2.  For this reason, some of the quircky ways we did things in version 2 had to be left behind.

  • The Good News

  • Your VirtualFriend 2 scripts Do Play in VirtualFriend 3!

  • The Bad News

  • But not completely.

  • Advice

  • If you have scripts which you've built in VF2 and are attached to,
you can probably make them work.
Otherwise, it might be best to wait for PeoplePutty (due Fall 2001),
which has a much more sophisticated Authoring system than VirtualFriend 2,
and is natively compatible with the VirtualFriend 3 players.
As of this writing, PeoplePutty is available to Beta Testers.
If you are interested in being one, email us.

  • Demo

is an example of playing a VirtualFriend 2 .vfe script in the VirtualFriend 3 browser plugin.

What Works:
  • Plain old speaking.
  • Keyframes, with a  caveat.
  • A handful of morphs.
  • Special voice commands.

  •
What Dont':
  • Textures & Backgrounds.
  • Interactive HyperText commands, such as "\click".
  • Most of the morphs.
  • Script branch commands.

Keyframe Caveat:

Avoid putting keyframes at the end of sentences.  (lines of text)

Morphs that Work:
Cat
Burger
Baba
Roswell
Moon
Neutral
Chimp
Macaw
Stairs
Jake
Lion
